Everyday Thinking

Often it can seem like we are  the last people in the world to know something. Many people spends hours each day online, trying to improve their lives. Earn more money, lose weight, find love and the meaning of life, the universe and everything (hint it’s not 42).

It’s all too easy to be caught up in the show. We all like to be entertained. Its possible to spend more time researching how to live than actually living. Since following my heart and moving overseas I can confidently say that I have fallen into this trap.

For this reason I don’t try to pass on everything I find amusing online. I don’t want to waste anyones time.

It’s a trap, thinking if only we can learn a bit more then everything will change. Unfortunately there is simple too much information out there, you are. Every second there is more videos uploaded than you can watch in an entire day.

So I am changing my emphasis from knowledge to inspiration. Because no matter how much knowledge you have you always want more, but if you have inspiration as you see on this site just about anyone can get the knowledge when they need it.

However there is a site that I am sure many of you have heard of, but if you haven’t I don’t want you to be that last person to know. This site has changed my life. It shows you the amazing things some people do every day that make a real difference in the world. It makes you think in new ways. It is remarkable and very inspirational.

If you haven’t visited for a while, I recommend you go back and take another look, and if you have never been, get very excited.

One moment you can feel inspired, the next embarrassed, frightened and  even sad.

Tomorrow is a new beginning, you don’t have to be the same person you are again. Use this as a kick start, to get off your butt, and hopefully make not just your own life better.

This wonderful site is TED.COM

And here are a few of my personal favourites to get you started.

I don’t feel that you necessarily have to like a piece of art to appreciate it, but for me, there are a few things it must do.

1. Be technically advanced, beyond the point where I feel I could have done it myself.

Ladies looking at a Statue of David

2. Be original (or have it’s inspiration so well hidden as not to be recognizable), cleaver or amusing.

3. Create an emotion (either good or bad)

What do you think? Is there anything I have left off? Do you use different criteria?

Most of us do this hundreds of times a day unconsciously. If we can gain even a little control over this bad habit we would become some of the most powerful people on earth.

I really believe this, but if you feel that sounds a bit far fetched, then simple use it to be more focused and a little less stressed

It’s a foundation stone of so many religions, self improvement and success techniques, in-fact if you are able to do this simple thing, many of the other practices of successful and happy people will automatically follow.

Now, there is only one problem. I don’t believe you can, I don’t believe any one can, but even trying will make you life better.

So, what is the idea that could change your whole life.

Don’t Lie!

It’s that simple.

That simple to understand, but not that simple to do. In fact I don’t know of a single person in the history of the earth that was able to do this perfectly.

I am not talking about big lies, perjury, lying about tax returns, lying to you loved ones, because many people don’t do these.
I am talking about our internal self-talk lies that we all commit a hundreds maybe thousands of times each day, the white lies, half-truths and exaggerations.

I don’t think it is possible to eliminate these completely but even continuously trying to reduce these a little, would have massive positive affect. Even the tiniest lie makes us weaker, it erodes our commitment and belief in ourselves. We hate when other people lie to us, we should hate even more if we do it to ourselves.

A lie, is a lie, is a lie! In our mind whether you are committing perjury in the supreme court or quietly telling yourself that you will wake up early and exercising tomorrow. In you mind these are the same, they are a failure in consistency and will. You are not being true to yourself.
I don’t know about you, but my self-talk travels at a million miles an hour, thousands of thoughts seem to be going through my mind every second. If I can consciously catch even 0.001% of tiny lies each week, in a very short time you will see a dramatic change.
To make this a habit, you have to be diligent. It will take time, it will be hard at first, but get easier. I have always liked the ideas of the 10/90 rule which is the idea that the first 10% of any project sets up 90% of the results.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said
“Sow a thought and you reap an action;
sow an act and you reap a habit;
sow a habit and you reap a character;
sow a character and you reap a destiny.

Lying has a snow ball effect with one lie following after another just to cover the one told earlier.

Why do people do all this lying? People believe its easier to lie. Other times people don’t even realise they are doing it. Many people are scarred of the consiquesses, the think they will they loss their partners, their jobs, or even  their life?

This is something you will need to try in your own life, it will be hard, it will be scary, for a while your ego will get severely bruised. Just think. What is the worst possible thing that could happen? Whatever it is if you are still alive, then don’t worry about it most other things can be fixed
Remember do what you fear and fear disappears.

You get use to things very quickly, now you lie every minute of the day, you are very use to it. At the start you are not going to do it perfectly but keeping in your mind even catching yourself a couple of times a day, you will change your life. Try to eliminate the lie.

Start to form a new habit, you will feel uneasy, embarrassed, worried maybe even physically sick. You don’t want to hurt people, you want to be polite. If you are really worried about upsetting a lot of people this probably means you have been lying to them for a very long time and they don’t really know the true you. If they leave because of your new honesty then they were never you true friends or customers because they bought into the lies you gave them.

Grow from within, don’t lie to yourself and don’t lie to others, be honest but tactful. Think about what you really feel and if you can’t say in a positive constructive way. If you can’t do this then simply, don’t say anything at all.

It can also help cut garbage that we speak every day, like do you to really hate someones guts? I suspect you have never really had strong feeling about anyones intestines, even your own.

This is really about firstly being true to yourself and secondly about letting people know the real you in the world. Although in the beginning you might upset a few people you have been fooling by you years of lies.

Ultimately you will be living your life with amazing power of truth and self-mastery. Be a person of your word not just to others but most importantly to yourself.

Know this is something no one has everyone in the world before, you won’t do it perfectly, but give it your best shot and see what happens.

Start right now! If you think this is something that will be of benefit to you. Start now, make a small commitment that you know you will be able to keep. Try to catch at least one lie you are telling to yourself. Start with something easy, start with something you want to do. Then celebrate this once you have done it. Then start again. Pick the easiest first, feel your power grow. You will become a person of your word, other people will know the real you. If you can continue catching yourself even just once a day you are well on your way to because gone of the most powerful people in the world.

Good luck.

This profound idea comes from the classic book ‘How to win friends and influence people’.

“To get anyone to do anything, all you have to do is make them want to do it.”

Sounds simple, but not exactly easy. So, how do you make someone want to do something?

WII FM.

Think of it as people personal radio station, it’s an acronym for WHATS IN IT FOR ME? The question most people have playing minds consistently, many people feel the world should revolve around them, not the sun.

As Seth Godin says, people don’t want Email they want MEmail.

Once you recognise that people are thinking about themselves most of the time, and then, what other people are thinking about them the rest. You soon realise you have got to do something dramatic to make your interests, the interests of someone else.

Most things in the universe plod through their lives using the path of least resistance. If you can make it easy for people to get what they want, and at the same time,  align what you want, things get much simpler.

What do we do with WIIFM?

Put yourself in the other persons shoes

Put yourself in the other persons shoes

The key is to tune in, firstly put yourself in their shoes. Think, if you were in their position what are the question you would ask yourself?

The trick is to answer the core questions before people have had the chance to ask themselves.

What do I mean by core questions?

These are the questions it takes a little while for us to ask ourselves, it’s the crux of the issue, the ones below the surface. We might say we want a Ferrari, but really we want the feeling of superiority, we would get when, people we know, see us drive past.

Now most people will not even admit the real reason to themselves, so you definitely don’t want to say it this way either. But the point is, there is an ultimate reason or two. See if you only answered this guy wants a Ferrari, it doesn’t give you a lot of opportunities to for fill his wants, but if you were to recognise his need for the feeling of superiority. Then there are a lot of things you could offer that might satisfy this goal. When you have more options, you have a better chance to match his dreams with what you want him to do.

There is a very cool technique I found recently to help uncover the core wants. It is similar to the something nagging children use. Repeatedly asking ‘But why?’ every time a question is answered until a parent just gives up. But in this case, standing in their shoes, with the WIIFM station in mind ,we repeatedly ask ourselves

So What?

So what?

Think. Why is that important? Why should they care about that? Basically, So what?

You ask this again and again until, like the annoyed parent, you can’t answer anymore. This then is the core. You will find that it very rarely has anything do with a physical object.

This will be a reason WHY, it will generally be emotional.

Now you simple need to present this in a way that persuades and moves people.

Use this simple 2500 year old, four stage technique from Aristotle.

  1. Exordium – Get attention! Use a shocking a statement, tell a story, ask a question (relate to the topic in some way)

  2. Narratio – Pose the problem you audience is having

  3. Confirmation – Offer a solution to their problem (that is aligned to your wants)

  4. Peroratio – State the benefits to them of taking action on the solution. (use the core you found earlier)

There might be a lot of angles you could address, but what you are looking for is, to interrupt them, make them think WOW, yeah! that’s what I want and need, lets do it. So keep it simple, make it easier for them to say yes (path of least resistance) and secondly you want to have stirred up their emotions.

This becomes a lot easier the more you practice, once you use it a few times and see that amazing power it has, I am sure you will stick with it.

Everybody wants something, often they think that physical stuff is the answer, which it very rarely is. Find the core, their reason why, align with what you both want and present in a way that makes it easy to take action. Use this to help more people get what they want, so that in turn you will get more of what you want.

Adam Jason Moore Jumping for joy in the mountains of Northern Spain.

Hell Yeah!

Ordinary, extraordinary, it’s what people do with this one single thing that makes the difference.

Time.

Everyday, everyone has 86,400 seconds in which to make their lives magnificent.

Think for a moment, how many thoughts are flying through your head this second? In one scale, a second is a long time.

Now, before you get too relaxed thinking you have a lot of seconds each day. Let me scare you by changing the scale a little. Say you lived to be 100 years old, from the day you were born to the day you die at 100, have a guess how many days you would live?

36,525 thats it! When I first saw this I was a little shocked, that doesn’t seem like a lot. Considering most people don’t live to be 100 and you weren’t born yesterday, we don’t have even this much time left.

Time is simply one of the most precious things in the universe, you can always get more fame and fortune. You can’t get more time, no matter how of the other two you have.

Time does fly, People over estimate what they can accomplish in a day and under estimate what they can achieve in a year. But the real power is controlling you thoughts in the seconds, every one of the 86,400 each day is a precious gift, not to be wasted.

How many things can you think of in a second? A single decision in a split second can change your life. Many tiny decisions every second, compound and send your day, years and life flying off in one direction or another.

Lucky breaks or chance encounters, change lives in an instance. Think of some of the most significant turning points in your life, in hindsight, small decisions minutes before changed the path of your life forever.

Trying to micro manage every second of your day to achieve your ultimate life, apart from being nearly impossible, would probably drive you mad, and anyway supposedly 97% of all people don’t know exactly what they want to do with their lives.

For a wonderful life maybe you don’t need to know your ultimate goal, all you need to do is be heading in the right direction.

Here is a simple concept that if you keep it mind, can change everything in your life. This concept comes from internet marketer Seth Godin. It will act as an invisible rudder that will guide you to a wonderful life, which at this moment you probably cannot even articulate to yourself.

In 2006  Seth gave this talk to Google.  He was talking about business but it also an exciting idea to help guide your life.

Don’t just do things because you can. Be remarkable, do remarkable things. In business this is done so that you will be talked about. But for our personal life, doing remarkable things draws people to you.

I like the idea of being remarkable, now,I don’t know about you, but if I sit down and try to be remarkable,  I find it a little hard. So I wanted to find another way to start to be remarkable and live and extraordinary life.

This is when I came across this great blog article by Derik Sivers. This is a simple question you can ask yourself in less than a second, if done daily, overtime will lead us from an ordinary to an extraordinary life.

When deciding whether to commit to something, if I feel anything less than, “Wow! That would be amazing! Absolutely! Hell yeah!” – then my answer is no.

Whenever you are faced with making a choice, think about how excited it makes you feel. On a scale from one to ten. If you rate a thing a nine or a ten in excitement level, do it. If you score it at a seven or eight, think about what would it take to make you feel a nine or ten in excitement levels? Can you make this happen? With anything that doesn’t get you really exited or have the possibility of getting you really excited (a score of one to seven) simple don’t waste you time and life doing it.

It is interesting most things can be altered to be exciting. For example, work, for most people it is not the joy of their life. But say you got $100,000  a day pay rise to do the exact same job. Would you be excited to go to work each day? If you are still not, then you definitely need a new job. For most people reading this they probale have less than 20,000 days in their lives left. It’s time to love the things you do

So whenever you have to made a decision, think how do you feel about this because there is only HELL YEAH!!! or its no. This automatically gets you doing things that excite you, things that you are inspired by and then ultimately you will be extraordinary at.

If you read the stories of extraordinary people a common reoccurring theme is, they are true to their beliefs, live with passion and know what they are trying to do or go.

Use this everyday, every second that you have to made a decision, What gets you really excited?

Sometimes you simply won’t be able to get out of doing things that don’t excite you. Paying bills for example. But if realise that having gas and electricity helps with the smooth running of the loving household for which you are excited about. Then maybe by tinge these two things together you can get excited about things like paying bills.

But with this in mind, and you won’t just be doing it because you can , but because in your mind it is taking you in the direction of your extraordinary life.

So when you come to a fork in the road, you might not know exactly what you want in your life but more often then not people know what they don’t want. Using this will teach you not to simply put up with things you don’t really want because they are there, but to take you on a path towards things that take your life from ordinary to extraordinary.

You have one life, a few thousand days in which to make it extraordinary. So make every one of the 86,400 seconds today count.

One of my favourite things about photography, is its ability to allow you to see the world differently.

I used the Sony 16mm f2.8 lens

Panoramic of the Art Centre

Sweep panoramic from Sony NEX-5

This shot is done spinning the camera from left to right, smoothly while the motor-drive takes a number of shots that the camera then joins together.
After multiply attempts I managed to get the perfect framing with only a few small errors along a couple of the diagonal lines.
